Smart Tracks Race Models are smaller and lift the rudder blade 90° rather than 180° like the standard versions. This is primarily used when paddling in situations where you want the rudder up (Surf or shallows/weed) The rudder may be fitted without the included uphaul line (raise/lower cord) as the blades (sold separately) have a spring holding them down are not required for use. (Cord can be set to hold in the lowered or raised position). Smart Track Housings Bayonet Pin inserts in a hole drilled in the flat area of the rear deck in which the housing pin drops in and pivots to lock it in place. The Extended Tiller plate is measured from the leading edge of the blade housing to the centre of the pin is 40mm. The Race & Ski housings are primarily for surf skis and race kayaks. The Race version sits lower in the water than the ski version. All extremely rugged and corrosion proof extruded alloy parts are machined for precision fit, and coated with Teflon® 6061-T6. SmartTrack Race Mount uses a bayonet pin to attach to your kayak so will require the appropriate hole with internal locking bar to secure it. We recommend the small (shortest) rudder blade for most users with this housing. This blade is used mainly for Sit on Top Skis, and race kayaks and however the standard and the largest one used mainly on Tandem kayaks or those with a higher deck (some fishing sit on tops etc.) will also fit. These can be purchased separately but because often only a small section of your rudder will need to be replaced if damaged and because there are lot of options they are not included as standard. Not including all the parts makes the system more flexible and allows for your preference as to cable/cord, performance or recreation footrests etc. There are a large number of different Smart Track Rudder rear assemblies (6 common versions), they most importantly differ in the way they attach to your kayak. The other difference is the race versions are a bit smaller/lighter, blade doesn’t lift out as high and the rudder sticks out further from the mounting point (because skis are skinny often the mounting point is further from the end of the kayak in a wider section requiring a longer mount. Find the correct model to mount to the rear of your kayak. Do not assume that this version is the correct smart track mount for your kayak check to make sure it’s correct. That said this mounting is the important point so you don’t need to stress about anything other than how it connects to your kayak. There are a fair number of different Smart Track Rudder Options- if you are replacing a damaged version it is safest to use the same model. Model names should be written on the rudder housing (making it easy to figure out) but if that is worn or if you are not sure here is an explainer of the different options and models. Smart Track make 3 sizes of Rudder blade that are compatible with this rudder mount. You choose the size you want based on the size of your kayak and how deep (or rough) the water will be. Smart Track Foil Rudder Blade sizes are Small (Ski/ Racing), Single Kayak and Large (Tandem Kayak) . Smart Track also make a rear blade system called the Hybrid Foil.
