This generic Hatch cover with rim included, has a Bayonet Thread and has a 15cm diameter opening This is a complete Hatch and Rim – Suitable to replace hatches on many kayaks especially generic brands fitted to kayaks such as Finn, Spirit and others. It is a bayonet style and can’t cross-thread like other kinds of hatches and is generally easier to open than standard thread hatches which can jam. We recommend (even if it is not necessary) replacing the rim at the same time as the hatch cover (if convenient). The maximum diameter item that can be put in the hatch is 15cm. Other bayonet Hatch sizes are available 10cm and 20cm. American brands may use this imperial 5 inch version The hole that is required in your kayak deck (to fit the rim) is 16cm diameter. You can use this to replace a standard threaded hatch* but will need to replace the Rim (Female) section. There is a jar holder that fits snugly into the rim to hold a waterproof container (we don’t carry the container but a jar that held spread -peanut butter, honey etc are popular and there was a nalgene bottle that fitted well too) here * Threaded hatches on Spirit and Finn Kayaks were use on their earlier models prior to switching to this hatch. The threaded hatches (Screw down with multiple turns) they used are not in production and new parts are not available. If you have an older threaded hatch that isn’t working we recommend you use the bayonet hatch by taking out the old rim and (using the same fittings) install the rim off this new hatch. It should fit snugly and easily, using the same screw holes and open and close better etc. (can’t be cross threaded opens and closes in less than a quarter turn) which is why I assume it was introduced. It is a good idea to replace the rim at the same time as the hatch in all hatches especially if there is any age/ wear and tear you to ensure compatibility and water tightness. However we do note that there was an even earlier model threaded hatch with a different number of screw holes which is not as good a fit, also some hatches may have been off brand or replaced with a third party system due to reasons… In these cases the kayak may need a bit of modifying of the hole to get it to fit. If the hole is to small it is normally easy to enlarge it with a Rasp/file, utility knife/ box cutter, sandpaper etc.. If the hole is to big you can’t make it smaller (easily) and this hatch won’t suit. Taking out the old rim should be a matter of unscrewing the screws and gently levering it out (will have some silicon waterproofing that will hold it in place a little bit,) a screwdriver should be all you need. We recommend you clean the deck and put a new bead of silicon sealant on the rim of the hole (in your kayak’s deck) as well as the screw holes- any version of a silicon caulk suitable for a wet environment should suit there are many reputable major brands that will suit (e.g. Selleys roof and gutter, or something from mapei, soudal, Sikaflex etc.) just to ensure the seal is good. That said we do a very good sealant that is also a glue here Spirit Kayaks have not been in operation for some time (more than 10 years) and threaded hatches were replaced by the bayonet style prior to that. The manufacturer of the last threaded hatches is the same as this bayonet style one- not sure about the earliest versions. Finn Kayaks is also no longer currently making kayaks. We do try to stock the parts for these brands often the exact same OEM versions and if not available equivalent or better versions. *
